Are Lingual Braces Effective?

The obvious advantage of these braces is they straighten teeth while not visible, but there are specific advantages and disadvantages you should know.

Advantages of Lingual Braces

The most obvious advantage of these braces is they are invisible. Unless someone watches you closely, no one would be able to see them.

People are often concerned about decalcification when choosing braces. If you are addicted to tobacco or have poor oral hygiene, you may get yellow stains on traditional braces. But this is not going to happen with lingual braces.

Playing musical instruments that come in direct-contact with your mouth like flute or saxophone is not advised with traditional braces. However, with lingual braces, you can play musical instruments and sports etc. with no worries.

The biggest advantage is that these braces remain on the teeth at all times. You do not need to take them off for cleaning or remember to put it back on, therefore, there is less chance to lose it. Even when you are eating you do not need worry.

Apart from crooked teeth, these braces can be helpful with other orofacial problems as well. These can help with bite issues such as an underbite or overbite as well.

Cons of Lingual Braces

Many patients have complained about irritation due to the contact between metal and tongue. Even using a small bracket profile there was no solution to it.

Initially, there could be a speech problem though it lasts only for two to three weeks after getting them placed on.

As the braces are behind the teeth, cleanliness could be a problem. With front facing braces, the patient can check if there is food stuck in it, but that can be a problem with invisible braces.
